'Dance Moms' news 2016: Gianna Martello avoids drama; JoJo Siwa on being BFFs with Maddie Ziegler

"Dance Moms" cast member Gianna Martello is an island of calm in the sea of tension and drama that is Lifetime's popular reality series.
Since "Dance Moms" premiered back in 2011, Martello has assisted Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC) owner and chief choreographer Abby Lee Miller in instructing and managing the ALDC dancers. Once a student of Miller's, she now choreographs the ALDC Junior Elite Competition team, which has frequently won various dancing contests around the country.
But while "Dance Moms" is usually fraught with conflicts and fights between Miller and the "dance moms," Gianna said that she tries to avoid fighting and focuses instead on her work with the dancers.
Speaking with Buddy TV, Gianna said, "I try not to react to [the drama], because I know if I react to it, then I'm going to be brought into it more and more."
"I try to just stay focused, because I know that my job is solely with the children, and they shouldn't be involved in that yelling," she added. "They're here for the dancing, so I just try to keep them focused and always rehearsing, always just having their heads geared towards competition, rather than what's going on outside of the dance studio," she added.
Meanwhile, ALDC newbie JoJo Siwa recently spoke to TMZ about her friendship with former rival Maddie Ziegler, saying that she thinks of Maddie as one of her best friends.
JoJo and her mom, Jessalynn Siwa, became guests in the fifth season of "Dance Moms" before being signed as regulars in season 6. JoJo and Maddie were pegged as competitors for multiple seasons prior to JoJo signing on to "Dance Moms" for good. But with Maddie exiting the series in season 6, JoJo apparently no longer thinks of the former "Dance Moms" star as a rival.
"One day we will be like friends, equal, and just having fun," JoJo said, adding that she and Maddie make jokes about sharing a huge house when they get older.
Maddie, her mom Melissa Gisoni, and sister Mackenzie, left "Dance Moms" this year so that Maddie can focus on her acting career. A frequent Sia collaborator, Maddie has appeared in five of Sia's music videos, including the massively popular ones for "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart." She was a judge on this year's "So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation" and will soon appear in the Colin Trevorrow-helmed "The Book of Henry."
"Dance Moms" season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
