'Criminal Minds' season 12 casting news, spoilers: Paget Brewster & Aisha Tyler confirmed to return; EP dubs Mr. Scratch as 'baddie for the year'

After the major cliffhanger last season featuring the escape of 13 dangerous serial killers, the BAU team will need all the help they can get to capture the unsubs when "Criminal Minds" season 12 premieres this Fall.
During last month's 2016 San Diego Comic Con, Paget Brewster and Aisha Tyler were both confirmed to return for multi-episode arcs. Tyler was first introduced in season 11 as Dr. Tara Lewis while Brewster reprises her recurring role as SSA Emily Prentiss who rejoins the team to help track the escapees.
Executive producer Erica Messer released a press statement on Brewster's comeback after her last guesting stint in season 11. "We're excited to have Paget Brewster back for multiple episodes in our 12th season," she said. "The BAU can use more help this year since they've got a lot of known and unknown subjects to catch.
13 different murderers managed to escape but according to Messer, the plot picks up after Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) already caught most of them over the summer. "There are still five out there when we come into the premiere," Messer told Entertainment Weekly's Spoiler Room. "One of them is a guy Peter Lewis plays named Mr. Scratch. He is our baddie for the year. We will stretch him out and tell his creepy tales."
Introduced in season 10, the highly-intelligent and bizarre Mr. Scratch uses various psychological tactics and drugs to manipulate Hotch and the other team members. He was able to control his victims and make them attack others, making him a terrifying character who is difficult to catch. Cinemablend points out that there is a possibility he changes his M.O. and gets help from other criminals from the previous seasons.
Tune in to the season 12 premiere of "Criminal Minds" on Wednesday, September 28, at 9:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
