A primary reason for such rumors to surface is the idea of his character somehow spiraling down, basing from the past episodes. The season's latest episode "Derek" revealed more of Derek's character as he battles with his demons. With his issue being worse, Derek's ability to serve with the BAU hangs in the balance.

TVLine recently caught up with "Criminal Minds" showrunner Erica Messer, and she was generous enough to drop some hints as to how Derek's character is taking shape."There is a lot going on with Derek," Messer explained. "He's really taking up our emotional head space for a good chunk of this midseason stretch."

Playing the role of Hotch in the CBS series, Thomas Gibson also dished some details pertaining to a BAU member who might be exiting the show. If Derek's departure pushes through, it might be a huge shocker for all the viewers.

CBS recently released a teaser for the upcoming "A Beautiful Disaster" episode. Derek is seen to be having bouts of madness to the point of harming himself. "Do you see red, I see red," a voice most likely Derek's can be heard talking in the background. A confrontation between Derek and Hotch arises afterward. Derek aggressively says, "I can't sit down and do nothing," following Hotch's composed response: "You're off the case."

As for a character who's not been appearing on the show lately, TVLine asked Messer about the absence of Spencer Reid. It was reportedly about Matthew Gray Gubler's current deal not requiring him to be in every single episode of Season 11. "I always joke that [Matthew] makes me feel like I'm standing still, he has so many things going on all the time. There was an opportunity he didn't want to pass up for the fall that made him light with us, and we were happy to oblige because he's such a pro and such a love. We love to make him happy," Erica Messer said.

CBS will air "A Beautiful Disaster" on March 23.
