Three students from a middle school in Denver, Colorado are reportedly being held by police after guns and an alleged smoking device were found on school property Friday.

Denver police responded to a call from Skinner Middle School Friday after students reported to school faculty that three boys had guns and an alleged smoking device in their backpacks.

The school reportedly went into lockdown for one hour as police confiscated the items. Officials have not released why the three boys had the guns, or what type of smoking device the third boy was carrying when he was taken into custody.

"This successful outcome didn't happen by accident," Paul Pazen with the Denver Police Department said. "Student and staff did everything they were suppose to do."

Although the school was only in lockdown until about 9:15 a.m., some parents reportedly arrived at the middle school to take their child home early.

Pazen added that students at Skinner Middle School should be commended for speaking out when they saw something that wasn't right.

"Our students are to be commended for seeing something and saying something right away," he said.

One 12-year-old student told the Associated Press that although students were unsure if the Friday morning lockdown was a drill, they took the lockdown seriously.

"We had so many drills I didn't know if it was a drill or not, but we took it seriously," 12-year-old Maxcine Forsythe told the media outlet.
