"Code Black" is all-set to return for its sophomore season in just a matter of weeks, but two of the major characters in the story will no longer be around: doctors Christa Lorenson (Bonnie Somerville) and Neal Hudson (Raza Jaffrey).

Although it appears that the dust has already settled after the behind-the-scene shakeup, fans are still wondering how the storyline will address the absence of Christa and Neal. Executive producer Michael Seitzman recently caught up with TV Line and he shared interesting details on the upcoming installment.

According to Seitzman, the writers and creators came up with several versions to address the characters' exit but none of them passed their standards and had "any real weight." Since the series takes pride in being as close to reality as possible, the EP pointed out that the possible scenarios felt "generated in a writers' room and not in the real world." Despite being unrealistic, they eventually decided on not mentioning the matter anymore. "By not mentioning it at all, it felt like the least offensive way to deal with it," he continued.

Seitzman further explained that making a character say Christa or Neal went to a certain place just felt off. On the more positive side, the ambiguity surrounding their story arcs leaves the door open for Christa and Neal's possible return.

For the uninitiated, Sommerville and Jaffrey had to be dismissed as a part of the re-tooling needed to ensure that "Code Black" gets a second season renewal. If they ever decide on coming back to Angels Memorial, the EP said he'd "love" to see both actors make a guest appearance at some point in the future.

Series regulars for the upcoming installment include Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzman, Melanie Chandra, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Jillian Murray, Boris Kodjoe, and William Allen Young. Meanwhile, Rob Lowe is set to portray a guest starring role.

Tune in to the season 2 premiere of "Code Black" on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.
