"Code Black" went through a huge cast overhaul as it heads to season 2, and even though two of the main cast members left the show, a familiar face has been confirmed to be on board.

Film and TV actor Rob Lowe officially joins the hit medical series as a member of the Angels Memorial staff. The 52-year-old will play the role of Colonel Ethan Willis, a physician from the U.S. Military's well-known Combat Casualty Care research program. He has been pulled out from a hospital assignment in Afghanistan and was transferred to Angels Memorial to share his knowledge about combat medicine. He is described to have an "aggressive, rule-breaking" personality which captures the attention of Dr. Leanne Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden). Unfortunately, the rest of the doctors are not enthusiastic about his arrival.

Fans were outraged when two of the show's main characters Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey have been let go by the network. Hopefully, Lowe's presence will boost the viewership when the show returns this Fall. In an Instagram post, the veteran actor shared a short video clip of him while riding a helicopter for a seemingly action-packed scene. The caption reads: "BIG first day at the office, high off the deck. Stunts, blood, rescue. #medicine #CodeBalck #fun."

To fill the void left by Somerville and Jaffrey, the show will have three major recurring characters which have interesting backstories. The new MDs in Angels Memorial include "Heroes" alum Noah Gray-Cabey as rookie recruit Dr. Elliot Han, Emily Tyra as street-smart and athletic Dr. Noa Kean and Nafessa Williams as iconic child actor-turned-doctor Charlotte Piel.

Aside from Lowe and Harden, other members of the ensemble cast include Luis Guzman, Melanie Chandra, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Jillian Murray, Boris Kodjoe and William Allen Young.

Tune in to the season 2 premiere of "Code Black" which airs on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
