'Chicago Med' Season 2 release date, spoilers: What happens after the tragic loss in the season 1 finale? Colin Donnell teases 'major transition' for everyone

Dr. Rhodes faced the biggest surgery of his life in the season 1 finale of \"Chicago Med.\" | NBC

NBC's medical drama "Chicago Med" left viewers with a heart-wrenching finale last month, and looking back at how the nurses and doctors were placed in such emotional situations leading to season 2, viewers can only hope that their favorite spinoff returns very soon.

In the show's freshman season-ender, the team saw the end for one of their own. Dr. Downey died due to cancer complications, and Dr. Rhodes took it the hardest since he treated Dr. Downey as his mentor. The final moments of the finale saw Dr. Rhodes scattering Dr. Downey's ashes in the Hawaiian ocean.

Dr. Rhodes' portrayer Colin Donnell spoke to Hollywood Life recently where he mentioned how the events in the finale laid the groundwork for what season 2 will become. "For everybody on this show, everybody at the end of season 1, ends up in a period of major transition," the actor explained. "It's a great place to end season one; it just provides such a cool launching point for our second season. And I know they've got some major, major plans for [next season]."

As for the other characters, it seems like a new love triangle will be introduced in the upcoming season. It was pointed out that Dr. Manning no longer wears her wedding ring, which might mean that she is open to meeting other men. Dr. Halstead may finally have a chance with her, but fourth-year med student Jeff Clarke might get in his way. April had a lot to deal with in the previous season, as she had issues with her romantic life as well as her health. Season 2 might feature how she will resolve her problems.

Back in February, the show was renewed for another season by NBC. A return date for "Chicago Med" season 2 has not been announced just yet, but the show will likely premiere sometime in the Fall.
