'Chicago Med' season 2 air date, plot spoilers news: 'Oz' star Betty Buckley lands recurring role; Colin Donnell talks what's next for Dr. Rhodes

A familiar face will join NBC's hit medical drama "Chicago Med" when the third season premieres next week.
"Oz" star Betty Buckley is the show's latest addition, and she will portray an elderly patient in Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Buckley plays the role of Olga Barlow, who is known to have a desire to keep up with appearances to the point of endangering her health. The veteran actress joins previously announced guest stars for season 2 including "Garden State" star Ato Essandoh "90210" alum Mekia Cox. Aside from winning a Tony Award for her performance in "Cats," Buckley's acting credits include appearances in "Eight Is Enough," "Carrie," "Pretty Little Liars" and "Law & Order: SVU."
One of the highlights of the first season is Dr. David Downey's (Gregg Henry) death due to cancer and how Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) did everything in his power to save the life of his mentor. The last moments of the finale saw Connor following David's final wish by spreading his ashes into the ocean.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Donnell hinted that his character will deal with his loss by focusing more on his work life. Now that he is out of the emergency department and functioning in a new role in the hospital, the actor hints viewers will see Connor in a different light this coming season. "Even though he's doing his fellowship, re-doing another fellowship within cardiothoracic surgery, he sort of de facto became an attending trauma surgeon," he explained. "So he's gone-ish from the emergency department and it's great." He further added that he is looking forward to seeing the interesting dynamic between Connor and his new mentor, who will be portrayed by newcomer Essandoh.
Tune in for all-new episodes of "Chicago Med" season 2 which premieres on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
