Agent Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson), will return on the big screen as she joins Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), in "Captain America: Civil War" when it premieres in May 2016, Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of the upcoming film, have confirmed.

Speaking in an event in Beijing earlier this month, the directors said along with Black Widow, the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) would also play an important part in the film. Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) could also play an important but small role in the movie, they added.

Tony Stark, aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), will be the main adversary of Captain America although both are part of the Avengers.

Other characters in the movie include Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Crossbones (Frank Grillo).

The confirmation of Black Widow's addition to the cast is a big hint that the character will survive the upcoming Avengers sequel "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," which is welcome news to many.

However, it is not clear which side she will be in the clash between Iron Man and Captain America in "Captain America: Civil War."

The film will be loosely based on the story in the comic books where superheroes are forced to register their real identities and then work for the government. Captain America opposes this while Iron Man supports the plan, which causes them to join opposing forces.

With the cast largely in place, the writers said they are fine-tuning the plot so that it draws more from the current characters in the Marvel superhero films and less from the comic books.

Meanwhile Kristen Stewart recently stated in an interview that she would love to be part of the "Captain America" franchise as a superhero even though no role has been offered to her.
