Canada's justice minister and attorney general Peter MacKay addressed the horrific shooting in Ottawa, Canada today, tweeting his thanks to the heroes and police personnel who aided in apprehending one of the shooters.

The incident occurred at 10:00 a.m. at the Parliament building in Ottawa, when a gunman began firing shots near where Prime Minister Stephen Harper was speaking to members of parliament. Shots were also fired at the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill, leaving authorities to believe that more than one gunman was involved in the coordinated attack.

Following a police response, one of the gunmen was shot and another male suspect is in custody. Canadian media outlets are reporting that Sgt. at Arms Kevin Vickers, the 58-year-old head of security at Canada's House of Commons, delivered the fatal shot to one of the gunmen who attacked Parliament.

According to ABC News, Vickers was in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for nearly three decades before joining the House of Commons security team.

MacKay commemorated Vickers in a tweet on Wednesday evening, writing: "To all in Ottawa, stay safe & strong. Thank God for Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our Cdn security forces. True heroes #cndpoli," the attorney general wrote.

Politician Glenn Thibeault also tweeted his appreciation to Vickers, writing: "sgt at arms Kevin Vickers-nicest guy you'll ever meet. I am lucky to call him a friend. Today he is also our hero and we are 4evr grateful."
