Cameroon's government announced Tuesday that it succesfully killed 143 Boko Haram militants in a recent battle, just days after the terror group reportedly slaughtered 2,000 in neighboring Nigeria.

Cameroonian Information Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary reported that the five-hour battle took place at a Cameroonian military camp in Kolofata that had been invaded by Boko Haram militants on Monday.

"It is by far the heaviest toll sustained by the criminal sect Boko Haram since it began launching its barbaric attacks against our land, people and goods," Bakary said in a statement.

The statement from the Cameroonian government went on to say that of the 143 militants killed, one corporal was dead and four soldiers wounded.

The terrorist group has been waging attacks on neighboring Nigeria for the past five years. A recent attack last week in the town of Baga proved especially deadly, with government officials reporting that 2,000 had been killed.

In the wake of the Nigeria attack, some politicians in the United Kingdom have been critical of the British government for not doing more to assist the people of Nigeria in combatting Boko Haram, as well as failing to help those displaced in West Africa due to the continued Ebola crisis.

"This weekend saw an inspiring and moving display of international solidarity in the wake of the Paris shootings," Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather said while speaking at the House of Commons, adding "but while we were watching the horror unfold in Paris, hundreds or possibly thousands of civilians were slaughtered by Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, with very little international attention."
