Bruce Jenner Interview by Diane Sawyer: May Tackle Olympian's Gender Transition
There has been a lot of buzz the last couple of months about Bruce Jenner, most notably about his apparent gender transition.
Now it seems that Jenner is ready to tell the whole world the truth. ABC confirmed last April 6 that Diane Sawyer has scored an exclusive interview with the ex-Olympian. It will be aired as a two-hour special.
Will Jenner come clean about the gender transition? That has not been made clear. No details have been released yet as to what the topic of the interview would be. ABC just said it would be "far-ranging" and "exclusive." Sawyer obviously knows because the interview was taped back in February, even before Jenner was involved in a multi-vehicular accident in California.
Speculations have been flying about Jenner's alleged gender transition, but there has been no actual confirmation or denial being issued. Jenner and his family are such prominent public eye figures that to have the rumors lasting this long without definite verification is a feat in itself. Perhaps they are just waiting for this interview to air before they can give their own personal comments.
Rumors of an E! series spin-off focusing on the gender transition have been unconfirmed by the channel.
For sure, everyone will be tuning in to the interview because of the transition angle. But certain groups are already urging caution, even those that would rejoice if the interview was indeed about that topic. One of these groups is the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD.
"ABC has not confirmed that this special is about Bruce Jenner's gender identity, so we strongly urge media outlets to not speculate about the details of the interview," Nick Adams, GLAAD's director of communications and special projects, said in an email message.
The interview will be Sawyer's biggest scoop yet since stepping down from ABC's "World News" last summer. Her new role at ABC is to produce specials and mount important interviews such as this.
The two-hour special, a special edition of "20/20" entitled "Bruce Jenner – The Interview" airs on the ABC Television Network at 9 p.m. ET on April 24.
