'Borderlands 3' news: New film in the works? Plus new IP project from Gearbox

GEARBOX

First-person shooter game "Borderlands 3" is reportedly a work in progress, with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford looking for new members of the team in developing the upcoming title.

Following Pitchford's announcement via Twitter for game developers to work for "Borderlands 3," fans were surprised since Gearbox is also currently working on an IP project named "Battleborn." Such news added to the speculation that Gearbox has two different teams working for each project. Originally scheduled to be launched in February, the release date of "Battleborn" for PS4 is moved to May 3 this year.

In a recent interview with Games Industry, Pitchford stressed the value of making a good first impression for a new IP. "It's all about polish...and we wanted to make sure that when we launched the game that it was a solid and robust online experience whether you play a solo game or a cooperative game in the campaign or you're playing PvP. The game is pretty well connected and we wanted to make sure that all of that is perfectly fine for everyone. Nothing's perfect, of course, but we did a closed technical test and we had hundreds of thousands of people who signed up and that taught us a lot about what just really stressed the system and showed us what we really need to do to be ready for the prime time," Pitchford explained.

Adding to the upcoming endeavors of Gearbox is a "Borderlands" film, with the help of Lionsgate Productions and Arad Productions. "I've got these brands—Borderlands for example—but I worry that we've reached a ceiling with how many folks that we can reach in the video games [space]. I think there's a lot more people out there that would be excited about such a premise if they only knew it existed. And so the question is how do we reach people outside of the folks who we're already talking to in the video game space?" Pitchford wonders.

Gearbox's CEO Randy Pitchford hopes that the upcoming film will help find a larger audience for the "Borderlands" game series. As of the moment, a planned cast and release date is yet to be unveiled, since only Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad are attached to produce during this phase.
