The 12th season of "Bones" will be the hit procedural drama's final installment, and star Emily Deschanel recently expressed her sadness over the show's ending.

Deschanel, who plays the female lead in the series as Dr. Brennan, hinted in an interview that the sadness brought by the farewell season will not only be behind the screen. Although the actress refused to reveal more about her character,'s arc in season 12, she remains hopeful that Brennan will have a happy ending as well. "I hope there's some kind of happy ending on some level [for Brennan], even though I know there's going to be some sadness in the [next] season," she said.

During the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Deschanel mentioned that she was already doing preparations for the final series. The actress also revealed that the farewell season's premiere will immediately pick up right after the events in the season 11 finale. As noted by spoiler reports, Brennan will continue to suffer from her psychological issues. Fans can recall back in season 11 that Deschanel's character had a lot of visions and nightmares involving Zack Addy.

Zack managed to kidnap Brennan in the previous season, leading viewers to suspect that he is the notorious serial killer known as "The Puppeteer." It remains to be seen if it was indeed him who was responsible for the previous killings, but some speculations suggest that Zack was just the murderer's right-hand man. Rumor has it that if he is not the serial killer, there is a possibility that he will save Brennan in the end and sacrifice his life in rescuing her.

If one thing is for certain,  "Bones" co-showrunner of Jonathan Collier shared that the upcoming season will be nothing the audience can expect. "It is a world we have never been in that only Booth and Brennan can do justice to," he teased.

Fox's "Bones" is scheduled to return at midseason 2017.
