Bones season 10 started with the death of Lance Sweets played by John Francis Daley. Sweets' death in the episode titled "The Conspiracy in the Corpse" was a major shock for many, especially the way he met his end by being bludgeoned to death.

Sweets' death was extra poignant given that Daisy is pregnant with his child. The premiere episode of the season ended with the Jeffersonian team trying to figure out who killed Sweets.

Before we go into why Sweets had to be killed off on screen, let's see what the rest of the season has in store for viewers.

In a sneak peek at the second episode provided by Entertainment Weekly, the Jeffersonian team cope with Sweets' death. While they try to solve the conspiracy that led to Sweets death, it looks like they are dead set on nabbing the killer.

Ahead in the season, the International Business Times is reporting that Wendell Bray, played by Michael Grant Terry, will return. He was last seen in season nine going into chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.

In Season 10, IBT reports that Bray will not return to die on screen but he will actually live through the current season.

So why did Sweets have to be killed? FOXct reports that Daly is moving on to directing films. He has signed on to direct Vacation, starring among others Christina Applegate and Chris Hemsworth. His new venture into directing clashed with the filming of the series and so his character Sweets had to be killed on screen.

Daly, in a USA TODAY interview, explained how his onscreen death was "a grim moment", and that he cried after his final screen was shot.

Daly has slowly and surely been transitioning into directing films, and has a number of successes to his credit including Horrible Bosses and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.
