Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson's camp have suggested that Americans "pray for Donald Trump" after the real estate mogul attacked Carson during a recent 95-minute rant in Iowa.

Armstrong Williams, a personal friend and advisor to Carson, recently told CNN that the 2016 presidential hopeful recently suggested that he offer his prayers to Trump.

"When I spoke with Dr. Carson about this yesterday how we should respond, you know he was so sad about it. He said: 'Pray for him.' He feels sorry for him because he really likes Mr. Trump," Williams told the media outlet.

"To see him just imploding before our very eyes - it's just sad to watch," Williams added.

The comments from the Carson camp come after Trump attacked the retired neurosurgeon during a recent campaign stop in Iowa, comparing Carson's "pathological temper" from his youth to an illness exhibited by a child molester.

"If you're pathological, there's no cure for that," Trump said. "If you're a child molester, there's no cure. They can't stop you," he added.

Trump added that those who follow Carson for president are "stupid."

"How stupid are the people of Iowa?" Trump asked while speaking at the Iowa Central Community College. "How stupid are the people of the country to believe this crap?"

As Reuters reports, fellow 2016 presidential candidate Carly Fiorina came to Carson's defense, tweeting on Friday that "Anyone can turn a multi-million dollar inheritance into more money, but all the money in the world won't make you as smart as Ben Carson."
