Directorial brains Anthony and Joe Russo have just hinted that Chris Evans will no longer be reprising his Steve Rogers or Captain America role in the forthcoming installment of the "Avengers" franchise, "Infinity War."

Since "Captain America: Civil War," fans have been wondering whether the star-spangled superhero will be letting go of his iconic identity after a bloody hand-to-hand combat with Iron Man. In the last movie, Rogers' character dropped his vibranium shield suggesting that he's calling it quits. Unfortunately, fans' worst nightmare has just been confirmed by the famed directorial brothers.

"I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It's] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making," Joe Russo said as he explained the meaning behind the dropping of the iconic shield in an interview with the Huffington Post.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, the directing duo revealed that the third installment of the "Captain America" series was not originally intended to revolve around the conflict within the Avengers organization especially between Cap and Iron Man. The brothers mentioned that an idea was raised about focusing the film on the so-called Madbomb and force Cap to fight a horde of zombified humans.

Had Robert Downey Jr. not signed the contract for the "Civil War" film, the movie would have come out totally different. With Tony Stark in the "Civil War," the story picked up where the previous Avengers movie left off. "Age of Ultron" already hinted of a brewing rift between Rogers and Stark over the future of the organization.

"There was a period where we did discuss a third act that revolved around the Madbomb from Cap mythology. It didn't have anything to do with Civil War, and if we couldn't get Downey – in the very, very early conversations before we nailed him – somebody pitched the idea of a third-act that revolved around the Madbomb, which makes people crazy," Anthony Russo said in an Entertainment Weekly interview.
