"Captain America: Civil War" star Chris Evans may be in the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War," but now, it seems there is a good chance that he won't be in it as Captain America.

While this scenario isn't exactly surprising, given that Cap did leave his shield behind after his climactic fight with Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) at the end of "Civil War," fans now have official confirmation of the upcoming storyline care of "Civil War" directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who will also be helming "Infinity War."

Speaking with The Huffington Post, Joe confirmed that Cap abandoning his shield in "Civil War" has an impact on future events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

"I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity," he said. "[It's] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making," Joe added.

The Huffington Post notes that while Steve Rogers may no longer be fighting the bad guys as Captain America, he could still do so under a different identity. The outlet points out that in the Marvel Comics, Rogers takes on the mantle of the Nomad when he loses faith in the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, there is bad news for fans who have been eagerly anticipating an X-Men sighting in "Infinity War." While rumors have been popping up in the last few months that one or more of the X-Men could be featured in the upcoming MCU film, the Russo brothers recently confirmed that the chances of there being an X-Men–Avengers crossover in "Infinity War" are slim.

"As far as we know, right now there isn't talk regarding the X-Men," Joe said in an interview with ComicBook.com. "I don't know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening but we certainly haven't heard of any," he added.

He also clarified that the X-Men were never meant to be in "Civil War," saying, "There was not talk on 'Civil War' about the X-Men."

"Avengers: Infinity War" is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018.
