Australian Male Model Recently Killed After Joining Islamic State
A young man who recently enjoyed a career as a model has reportedly been killed in the Middle East after joining the Islamic State.
25-year-old Sharky Jama had reportedly been living in Melbourne, Australia, working as a male model when he was recruited to join the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.
Jama, who was originally born in Somalia, had reportedly been stationed for the extremist group in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, but was recently killed in Syria during a conflict.
The young man's family, who still lives in Melbourne, was reportedly notified of their son's death earlier this week via phone call and text message.
A spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade recently told ABC Online that it could not confirm Jama's death.
"Due to the extremely dangerous security situation, consular assistance is no longer available within Syria," a spokesperson told the media outlet.
"Australians who become involved in overseas conflicts are putting their own lives in mortal danger," the spokesperson continued, adding that "any Australians fighting with non-state militia in Syria or Iraq should end their involvement in the conflict now and leave the conflict zone."
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott added in a statement that all Australians should be discouraged from "going overseas to join these terrorist groups".
"Don't. They are death cults. That's what they are," Abbott said when discouraging Australians rom joining the Islamic State.
"They're not about religion. They're just about death. And it's just as likely to be your death as anyone else's death. If you go overseas for this kind of purpose, you are a danger to others, you are a danger to yourself. Don't do it."
