Australia Police Shoot Terror Suspect Following Stabbing
Australian police reportedly shot dead a known teenage terror suspect after he stabbed two counter-terrorism officers.
The arrest comes after Australia announced it had foiled a plot by the Islamic State to randomly and publicly behead someone in Sydney in the coming weeks.
Officials confirm that the incident happened when18-year-old Abdul Numan Haider was asked to visit a police station in Victoria for questioning due to suspicious behavior. When the suspect showed up to the police station, he reportedly stabbed two police officers. In response, one of the officers shot the 18-year-old, fatally wounding him.
"This was a planned and agreed meeting that was to occur at the Endeavour Hills police station. When these two police officers approached him, they were stabbed, one very seriously," Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay confirmed to Reuters this week.
"One of the injured police discharged his firearm, fatally wounding the 18-year-old."
Counter-terrorism officials have confirmed that they have detained dozens of suspects and conducted sweeping raids in an attempt to thwart a planned terror plot in the far-away country. Last week, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the country had gained intelligence that the Islamic State terrorist group was plotting to behead a random Australian citizen in public in Sydney, and they were trying to recruit local Australian nationals to carry out the barbaric act.
The Islamic State reportedly targeted Australia to show how far their reach could extend.
Abbott described the terror claims as "not just suspicion," adding "this is intent and that's why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have."
