Fans of the popular Japanese anime "Attack on Titan" will have to wait at least another half year to see the long-awaited second season of the manga-based series.

First announced in 2015 and originally slated for an April 2016 release, season 2 of "Attack on Titan" was pushed back to later this year. Now, new reports are saying that the season 2 premiere is being pushed further back to January 2017.

Last month, various media outlets reported that "Attack on Titan" season 2 was being postponed to give the team behind the manga more time to produce new content. According to MoviePilot, the makers of the anime adaptation want the manga to be at least four story arcs ahead of the series before they continue adapting the manga for television.

Now, The BitBag reports that the manga is still only two story arcs ahead of the anime. Because of this, the anime's publisher is delaying the series' launch and has pegged January 2017 as the new release date for season 2.

Another reason for the new release date could be that "Attack on Titan" director Tetsuro Araki is working on a bunch of other projects, most notably the anime series "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress," which is also produced by Wit Studio, the animation studio behind "AoT."

The new release date was first revealed by Manu Guerrero, marketing director of Selecta Vision, a Spanish anime distributor. According to Otaku Tale, Guerrero spoke about the "AoT" delay during a podcast with Mision Tokyo, in which he also revealed that Selecta Vision had been trying to acquire the rights from Kodansha to air the anime in Spain.

Meanwhile, Kodansha has just announced some new "Attack on Titan" merchandise. On Saturday, May 21 at the Anime Central in Chicago, the publisher revealed that it had acquired several new licenses for the series and will be releasing the new "AoT" merchandise this year.

These new "AoT" offerings include "The Attack on Titan Anime Guidebook " and "The Attack on Titan Coloring Book." The guidebook consists of at least 170 pages of concept designs and interviews with the actors from the anime. The coloring book, which was released in Japan in April, is intended for adults and has 60 pages of scenes and characters from the bestselling manga.
