The official launch of the Atheist TV channel happened this week, with nonbelievers promoting the new television station and Christians denouncing the need for such a creation.

David Silverman, president of the American Atheists, said at a launch party in New York on Tuesday that he is excited to provide a television channel free of religion, denouncing shows like the highly-popular "The Bible" on The History Channel that provide a historical account of religion.

"Atheist TV is geared toward every atheist in the broadest possible sense. Whether they call themselves atheists or skeptics or humanists or any of the other labels that people use to identify themselves, Atheist TV is for them," Silverman said at Tuesday's launch party, according to The Christian Post.

The new television station, endorsed by Richard Dawkins, can be accessed using Roku, and is the first channel to cater specifically and only to nonbelievers.

Ken Ham, creationist and president of the Christian group Answers in Genesis, blasted the new television channel this week, saying that for a nonbeliever to dedicate so much time to expressing their lack of religion proves they actually believe in God.

"It is incredible that atheists spend so much time, effort, and money arguing against Someone that they don't even believe exists!," Ham wrote on his blog this week. "Where are all their books, websites, and magazines that argue against the mythical Easter Bunny? This is because they do know God exists but they are suppressing the truth in unrighteousness."

The new channel, known as "Atheist TV" and started by the American Atheists, has branded itself as "an idea whose time has come."
