Atheist Group Demands Apology After School Nurse Scolds Student Who Refused to Stand for Pledge
An atheist organization is reportedly demanding an apology from a Pennsylvania school nurse after the nurse refused to medically treat a student who refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
The American Humanist Association recently sent a letter to the Carlisle Area School District in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, demanding an apology and accusing the school's nurse of "bullying" a student after the student refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
"To say that the actions of school district staff in this situation have inflicted trauma upon this child would be an understatement," Monica Miller of the American Humanist Association wrote in a recent letter sent to Carlisle Area School District Superintendent John W. Friend and Principal Colleen Friend.
"She was bullied and subjected to public embarrassment for doing nothing more than harmlessly exercising her constitutional rights," Miller added.
The incident reportedly took place on April 2 at Wilson Middle School, when an ill student refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, reportedly resulting in a response from the school nurse.
"Why didn't you stand for the Pledge?" the nurse reportedly asked the student, according to the letter from the American Humanist Association.
When the student replied that they didn't want to stand for the pledge, the nurse reportedly responded: "Fine! Then leave! I have the right to not service you!"
The American Humanist Association is reportedly demanding a written apology from the school. The school has responded by saying it's investigating the alleged incident.
