Assault Charges Against George Zimmerman Dropped, Attorney Says
Separate assault charges against George Zimmerman, the man acquitted of the 2012 killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin, have been dropped.
Florida State Attorney Phil Archer announced Friday that a separate charge against Zimmerman that alleged he threw a wine bottle at his ex-girlfriend will be dropped.
"While it is clear that the officers had probable cause to arrest Mr. Zimmerman, which was affirmed by the circuit court judge at initial appearances, the subsequent recantation by the victim of her initial statement along with new documents provided by the victim and her attorney precludes my office from proceeding further," Archer said.
Zimmerman's then girlfriend accused the 31-year-old of throwing a wine bottle at her and shattering her cell phone following an argument near a residence in Lake Mary, Florida on January 9. Police officers arrested Zimmerman on probably cause after they heard glass breaking and saw the woman driving with the headlights off.
The 31-year-old has been in the media spotlight since he was acquitted of murder charges after shooting unarmed African American teenager Trayvon Martin near the boy's Florida home back in 2012.
Since his court case, Zimmerman has been involved in other legal issues mostly related to domestic violence claims. In 2013, Zimmerman's then-wife Shellie Zimmerman told police that the 31-year-old threatened her with a gun and punched her father during a heated argument.
Also in 2013, then-girlfriend Samantha Scheibe also accused Zimmerman of domestic violence, but later dropped the charges.
Zimmerman was also involved in a road rage incident in 2014, when a driver said Zimmerman threatened him and followed him to his workplace.
