Assassin's Creed VR Experience update, movie version set to be released Dec. 21

Ubisoft

As announced by Ubisoft via Twitter, Assassin's Creed VR experience will be released this year.

Practical Magic, a Virtual reality studio, is heavily involved with the development of the project. As announced by president of Practical Magic VR & director of VR Experiences Matthew Lewis during the GDC, the upcoming offering from Ubisoft will be an experience and "not a game." Moreover, a movie is in progress as the next big thing for the series with Michael Fassbender as the lead role.

Meanwhile, there would be no Assassin's Creed game to be anticipated this year. A sequel to the movie is currently in the talks, with Fassbender reprising his two roles as Callum Lynch and his 15th century Spanish assassin ancestor Aguillar, as reported by Gamespot.

"We're excited about the announcement of the Assassin's Creed VR Experience and we look forward to working with New Regency, Fox and Practical Magic to share more in the future," said Michael Beadle, Ubisoft spokesperson.

Sure to excite VR and Assassin's Creed series fans, the companies involved have yet to announce particular details on the project. Since it has just been confirmed, details on the experience's storyline remain unclear, whether or not it will follow the movie plotline. However, Polygon reported that the VR experience was filmed alongside the movie, shooting in locations such as Malta, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The movie version of the well-known game series chronicles the life of Callum Lynch (Fassbender). He explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar, and while gaining the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers a dark past in his identity. The film is director by Justin Kurzel, and is written by Bill Collage and Adam Cooper. Fassbender's co-stars include Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons.

As reported by VRFocus, Assassin's Creed VR Experience is also confirmed to arrive in head-mounted displays (HMDs) later this year.
