"Ascension" was supposed to run over six weeks initially on the Syfy channel. But it has now become just a three-day series with two episodes per day starting Dec. 15.

In the show's initial two-hour airing, it was revealed that instead of traveling through space, the ship USS Ascension was actually underground and that its occupants were being observed by humans as part of an experiment.

The series began 50 years after the USS Ascension was launched in 1963 on what was supposed to be a 100-year mission to find another home for humans. Aboard the ship, the older generation had power while the younger generation remained discontent as they realized that they would never see their destination and were just burdened with caring for the ship.

A murder case aboard the ship got events rolling in the first episode as Captain William Denninger (Brian Van Holt) had to find out who killed Lorelei Wright (Amanda Thomson). Denninger received assistance from his wife Viondra (Tricia Helfer) who he had been paired with by the ship's computer. This meant very little love between the two of them. Viondra actually slept with Councilman Rose (Al Sapienza ) who wanted Denninger's post. However, Viondra was seen to have her own interests at heart as she revealed Rose's plan to Denninger.

Charged with investigating the murder of Wright was Oren Gault (Brandon P. Bell) who had no clue about police work as he had spent his life on the ship. This meant that he had to turn to movies to understand how to investigate a murder case.

The twist in the plot was revealed at the end of the first two hours when Stokes (Brad Carter), the last person to see Wright alive, escaped from a jail cell and tried to shoot Gault, after which he was sucked through an airlock and landed on a pad outside the spaceship. It was then revealed that the entire mission was a ruse and that they were only being watched by Harris Enzmann (Gil Bellows), the son of Abraham Enzmann, the founder of the mission.
