Apple WatchKit Release Date News: WatchKit Offered To Developers

YouTube

Apple has released the WatchKit to developers. The WatchKit gives them the opportunity to develop new apps that link the iPhone to the Apple Watch, which is due to be released next year.

While Apple has not yet provided a release date for the much touted Apple Watch, it has gone ahead with the release of the WatchKit. When it announced the WatchKit, Apple noted that app notifications from the iPhone can be routed to the Apple Watch. The watch can then send inputs to the iPhone whenever the user taps on it or uses its features.

TechRepublic describes how developers can use the WatchKit to create notifications that are interactive. They will also be able to create "Glances" which are described as one page views of apps which will show up directly on the screen of the Apple Watch. Users can then swipe from one page to the next and get a "quick glance" at relevant information, which could be a stock market report or a weather update.

Finally, developers will also be able to use the WatchKit to create full scale apps which can run on the Apple Watch. This ability, according to TechRepublic, surprised many developers as it means they can now develop apps with a full user interface for the Apple watch.

However, all the apps designed with the aid of the WatchKit will require the Apple Watch to be paired with an iPhone. TechRepublic notes that only some files for apps will be loaded into the Apple Watch, while the iPhone will have to do all the other work and run the code needed to perform tasks on the watch. This drawback might be addressed by Apple in the near future.

TechRepublic notes that if the iPhone does all the processing work, it could help conserve the battery on the Apple Watch.
