Apple Watch Release Date Early 2015; WatchKit SDK Coming In November

Although the Apple Watch had been set for release in the early part of 2015, Apple announced last Oct. 16 that a WatchKit SDK will be released for it this November 2014.

Apple also hinted that there might even be a launch date for the WatchKit.

The WatchKit will allow developers to create apps that will run on the Apple Watch. Slash Gear quoted Apple CEO Tim Cook as saying that, "The Apple Watch has had a great reception from those in the tech industry, from people who know a lot about fashion and style, and people who know a lot about watches."

Third party app developers will be thrilled by the availability of the WatchKit as it opens up new opportunities for app development. This also means that end users will not be limited to choosing from apps that are being developed by Apple, in conjunction with a few chosen companies. So far Apple has listed BMW and American Airlines as some of the major companies it is working with to develop apps for the Apple Watch.

As for the features of the WatchKit, SlashGear assumes that it will allow developers access to some of the watch's basic hardware including the heart rate sensors. This means the WatchKit's features will be along the lines of the toolkits that were released for iOS and OS X.

The release of the WatchKit is another attempt by Apple to encourage third party developers to create apps for its products. This trend was kicked off by Apple earlier in the year when it released HealthKit and HomeKit. HelathKit deals with health and fitness apps while HomeKit allows third party apps to integrate with household gadgets controlled via its iOS.
