The Android Lollipop 5.0 is the latest version of the Android OS used on smartphones. Since its release a few months ago, it has only been installed on a couple of new devices such as those in the Nexus line.

Samsung has put off announcing when Lollipop 5.0 will be released and instead focused on releasing Android 4.4.4 KitKat for several devices including the Samsung Galaxy S3.

While the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is old news compared to the newer Lollipop, some devices still do not have it. Several manufactures also chose to skip it and instead roll out the Lollipop 5.0 update. Others carriers like AT&T chose to release the 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy S3 only last month, following which Sprint and Verizon rolled out similar updates this month for those on the device.

The Android 4.4.4 KitKat update, meanwhile, brings with it a number of changes including improvements in connectivity when it comes to 4G data. It also deals with the voice calling issues that many users have been facing.

Moreover it includes fixes for Bluetooth and SMS related issues. Also there is a patch to deal with the VPN disconnecting issue.

Security has been heightened via the Knox 2.0 security service.

Other changes include Kids Mode, Side Sync 3.0, Safety Assistance and a number of other improvements that are essential for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Gottabemobile states that the 4.4.4 KitKat update will also "help prepare the device for the upcoming Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade" which could happen anytime in the first half of next year.

Kpopstarz is also reporting that a customized ROM has been released for owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3. With it users will be able to update to 4.4.4 KitKat. It also notes that the AICP ROM, in addition to containing the Android 4.4.4 KitKat features also, has other improvements. These include a notification for lock screen, additional customization options and finally themes that can be used during lock screen.
