After months of being shrouded in mystery, "American Horror Story" finally premiered, revealing the full cast lineup and theme for the sixth season.

Series creator Ryan Murphy opened the premiere with a message for fans: "Tonight we answer the question that's been haunting everybody, think you've figured it out? Let's wait and see."

Titled "My Roanoke Nightmare," Wednesday's premiere appears to be somehow related to the well-known lost Roanoke Colony in North Carolina, in which people have mysteriously disappeared back in 1590. Instead of the colonial era, however, the premiere's storyline is set in modern-day North Carolina. The first episode also previews how different this whole season will be from its predecessors which had a traditional narrative.

Season 6 is being presented as a true-crime style documentary, complete with interviews and re-enactments. The story centers on a mixed-racial couple Shelby (Lily Rabe) and Matt (Andre Holland) as they tell their horrific experiences in their new home. Prior to moving, Matt experienced a traumatic experience after he was attacked while Shelby had to deal with a miscarriage. The couple eventually decided to live on Roanoke Island in North Carolina where they bid $40,000 against a gang for a huge farmhouse. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson also stars as Matt and Shelby's portrayers in the re-enactment scenes.

In an interview, Gooding Jr. shared his thoughts on reuniting with his "People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" co-star Paulson. "It's really been a treat to finally engage with her on camera," he said, "When we did 'The People v. O.J.,' it was more about my scenes and then her scenes and us being in the courtroom but separate—but we're not separate no more!"

Also included in the confirmed cast lineup for season 6 are Angela Bassett, Adina Porter, Finn Wittrock, Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, Kathy Bates, Wes Betley and Denis O'Hare. Although Lady Gaga was announced to be on board the cast prior to the premiere, her name doesn't appear in the credits which might mean she'll have a small part this season.
