'American Crime' season 3 spoilers, cast news 2016: Connor Jessup confirmed to join cast, plot to explore themes involving labor issues in North Carolina

After an outstanding performance in the previous season of "American Crime," actor Connor Jessup will be returning to ABC's anthology drama for a new role.
Jessup's new role is yet to be announced, but he will be joining the show's other original stars including Timothy Hutton, Felicity Huffman, Regina King, Lili Taylor and Richard Cabral for season 3. Jessup's first appearance in the show impressed a lot of viewers after his brave performance as an abused high schooler who struggles with his sexuality. Aside from "American Crime," Jessup's acting credits include TNT's "Falling Skies."
In a press statement, executive producer Michael McDonald praised Jessup's acting prowess and expressed the creators' excitement to see what he brings to the table next season. "Connor Jessup is one of the smartest and most talented young actors working today," McDonald said. "John and I believe Connor's performance will be even more emotionally shocking than last year as his character helps shed new light on the opiate addiction epidemic that is plaguing America."
"American Crime" recently earned multiple nominations for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards including one for the Outstanding Limited Series award wherein the series will compete against "Fargo," "The Night Manager," "Roots" and "People v O.J. Simpson." King was nominated for an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie award, while both actresses Taylor and Huffman also got a nomination for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie award. In 2015, the critically-acclaimed series had 10 Emmy nominations and King won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie.
Set in North Carolina, season 3 will explore themes involving labor issues, individual rights and socioeconomic divides. Not much is known about the upcoming season but more new details are expected in the coming months.
The third season of "American Crime" is expected to premiere early 2017 on ABC.
