'American Crime' season 3 news and updates: Storyline to focus on labor issues, Regina King joins cast

ABC's critically-acclaimed anthology drama "American Crime" has been renewed for a third season, and now fans are counting the days until the series returns with a new set of characters and storyline.
According to Deadline, original star Regina King is poised to return for a new role. King won an Emmy for her work on the show, and her co-actors Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman are also expected to join the cast. The show previously filmed in Austin, Texas, but after being awarded a California tax credit, production will now be moved to Los Angeles.
Details about the plot for season 3 are yet to be revealed, but the story will be set in North Carolina and it will revolve around labor issues. In a press statement, director John Ridley spoke about King's participation in the new chapter, saying: "We could not be more excited to welcome Regina back for a third season of 'American Crime.' She is among the talent who have quickly become intimately associated with the program. As with the first two seasons, her many fans can expect a total transformation as she plays one of the complicated individuals caught up in a story that deals with labor issues, economic divides and individual rights in this season's setting of North Carolina.".
Ridley recently spoke to Los Angeles Times to share details on how they conceptualize the story arc for every season, explaining how they have to make it close to real-life situations. "When you're dealing with real-life stories you need to honor the facts, but certain incidents take on a cultural density beyond the horror of the crime itself," said the director. "For 'American Crime' we needed the latitude to take the story into all these different directions because it's not only about sexual assault. It's also about schools, it's about social media and economics and race and class and homophobia. We wanted to look at the cascading effect this crime has on an entire community."
ABC has yet to announce a premiere date for "American Crime" season 3, but it is expected to be released sometime next year.
