Lionsgate and CBS Films released the first production photo for the upcoming film adaptation of "American Assassin" starring "Maze Runner" actor Dylan O'Brien.

In the photo, O'Brien was seen pointing a gun over a man who was lying on the ground. Sources say the man could possibly be a terrorist. The lead character was in a dim room with concrete walls. It might have been a secret prison cell for criminals. More importantly, the still looked like O'Brien was going to take out the captive.

Prior to releasing the photo, the official Twitter page for the film released a behind-the-scenes pic of O'Brien. It was only a silhouette of his character holding a gun.

The film will be based on Vince Flynn's 14-novel Mitch Rapp series, all of which have made it to the New York Times best-seller list. Meanwhile, the last three books have claimed the top spot at one point in time.

"American Assassin" follows the story of Rapp, who is recruited into the CIA block ops by Cold War veteran Stan Hurley. O'Brien will be taking the role of the main character in the series. His mentor will be portrayed by "Batman" actor Michael Keaton.

Joining the cast are "Friday Night Lights" actor Taylor Kitsch, "Loraine" actress Shiva Negar, and "The Best Man" actress Sanaa Lathan.

Lathan will portray CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy. Rapp and Hurley will be recruited into the team by Kennedy to investigate random military attacks on civilians. The team will coordinate with a Turkish agent who is going to be portrayed by Negar. Together they will discover a mysterious operative, who will be portrayed by Kitsch, who is attempting to start a third world war in the Middle East.

The film is in its early stages of production. The cast are reportedly shooting in Europe.

The studio hasn't confirmed a release date for "American Assassin," but it is expected to premiere at theaters in 2018.
