AMD Polaris release date: AMD unveils RX 460, RX 470 video cards at E3 2016

AMD unveiled two new graphics cards, the RX 460 and the RX 470, during this year's PC Gaming Show at the currently ongoing Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

AMD CEO Luisa Su debuted the new Radeon RX Series graphics cards, which harnesses the company's revolutionary Polaris architecture, at the event. According to an AMD press release, the RX 460 and the RX 470 are "set to transform PC gaming this summer by delivering enthusiast class performance and features for gamers at mainstream price points from $100-$300."

"Most gamers have a budget and it's usually around $100 to $300," Su said during the pre-launch showcase of the new AMD graphics cards, as reported by The Inquirer.

"That's about 84 per cent of the market, and we're trying to get extremely enthusiast performance at those types of price so that all gamers can enjoy that kind of performance," she explained.

According to Su, the RX 460 will offer serious power at just 75 watts and is ideal for e-sports games such as "League of Legends." Meanwhile, the RX 470 is the perfect graphics card for "1090p gaming." It is said to be a slimmed-down version of the RX 480, which got a separate reveal earlier this month.

The press release from AMD describes the RX 460 as a "cool and efficient solution for the ultimate e-sports gaming experience" and the RX 470 as "delivering refined, power-efficient HD gaming."

Ars Technica notes that shooting for the mainstream market appears to be a clever move on AMD's part, as the company faces stiff competition from Nvidia. The latter recently unveiled its GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 graphics cards, two of the fastest GPUs on the market right now.

AMD has not released the specs, prices, and release dates for the two new Polaris graphics cards, but given that the RX 480 is priced at $199, the RX 470 and the RX 460 should be somewhere near that price point.
