Amazon Prime Discount Deal: Offers $27 Discount For Subscribers After Giving 'Transparent' For Free
Amazon must be really desperate to expand its subscriber base.
As if streaming an entire season of "Transparent" for free (even though it's only good for 24 hours) is not enough, the e-commerce company is throwing in a hefty discount for new subscribers to its Prime service.
Over the weekend, Amazon announced it is offering a $27 discount for its $99 Prime subscription bundle, which includes video streaming, a music service, free delivery, and other assorted benefits.
The special rate of $72 per year or $6 per month came out only two days after the platform said it will stream all the 10 episodes of the Golden Globe Award-winning comedy drama.
The offer practically beats every competitor in the streaming video space. And if you're already a subscriber, you can still avail yourself of the discount. Once you get a subscription and cancel auto-renew on your current Prime subscription, you will activate the discounted subscription as soon as your current one end.
There's a catch, though. With the discounted Prime, you won't be able cancel subscription from month to month. "Once that $72 charge hits your credit card, you have the service through next January," AdWeek said.
In a single quarter last year, Amazon spent $100 million on streaming content – certainly a ton of money for a business that notoriously operates with extremely slim margins and spends its R&D money fearlessly.
But Amazon Chief Finance Officer Tom Szkutak said Prime has so many angles by which the company can win.
"When customers come in for free trials and they engage from a video content standpoint, we see the conversion being higher. We're adding new Prime members as a result of that, and the other thing we're seeing is they're buying physical product, which is a great impact for us," Szkutak noted, according to AdWeek.
Produced by Picrow for Amazon, "Transparent" is an American comedy-drama television series which debuted on Feb. 6, 2014. Created and directed by Jill Soloway, the story revolves around a Los Angeles family and their lives following the discovery that their father Mort, played by Jeffrey Tambor, is a transgender.
Tambor won Best Actor in a TV Series - Musical or Comedy for his portrayal as well as Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy for the entire show during the 72nd Golden Globe Awards.
