'Alien:'Covenant' spoilers: Ridley Scott film scary enough for fans to enjoy, says franchise newcomer Katherine Waterston

The long-running "Alien" franchise has always milked its narrative for potential ways to creep out audiences with different horror strokes. And in line with this tradition, the upcoming installment, "Alien: Covenant" is definitely walking the same line with a prequel that offers to continue the story told by its predecessor.
"Alien: Covenant" has garnered much interest even before the project officially entered production. As early as 2012, even before preceding film "Prometheus" rolled out, proponent Ridley Scott has already been teasing of a possible follow-up given how the current narrative at that time had posed a lot of questions. Just a couple months after, a sequel was already being actively pursued by 20th Century Fox.
Fast forward to this year, the film is almost at its unveiling with just a few months left and if there is anything that the footage has shown thus far is an indication of something, "Alien: Covenant" will not pull punches in terms of violence and gore. One particular sneak peek offered during 20th Century Fox's 2017 hosted event in New York City showed a victim carrying a Neomorph alien inside him suddenly had his spine ripped out. The very bloody visual of an alien birth then ended with the man's body left lifeless. Even a normally steamy love scene in the shower is given the scary twist when a creature creeps up on the situation.
Franchise newbie Katherine Waterston, who plays terraforming expert who is part of the Covenant ship named Daniels admits that the sequel's kind of horror is indeed terrifying. However, she also reiterates that they were able to strike the thin line which borders too much and just enough for the public to take.
"It's freaky," Waterston said. "It's definitely scary. I think people can handle it but it's going to be a thrill. I don't think it's going to destroy anybody's lives or anything but it is definitely scary. There's levity in it, too, and wonderful interpersonal dynamics and stuff. That was something that was so great about the original film. You really felt you knew these people and that they were specific and lovely and sad to see them go."
"Alien: Covenant" is set for release on May 19, 2017.
