'Alien: Covenant' news, release date: Film sequel moved to earlier release date
The upcoming film installment in the "Alien" franchise titled "Alien: Covenant" has been moved to an earlier release date.
The sequel for the science-fiction horror film "Prometheus" was originally meant to premiere on Aug. 4, 2017. Now, it's slated for a May 19 launch date. Along with the latest announcement, 20th Century Fox teased a photo for the upcoming film that features a terrifying shot of an alien. The snap included a relevant message which read, "Run."

The film, which was initially titled "Prometheus 2," picks up where the previous film left off. To recap, Michael Fassbender's synthetic David was left behind in an alien world following the failed Prometheus expedition. In the upcoming film, a colony ship called Covenant will be finding its way in uncharted territory. At first, they will believe that the planet is uninhabited, but they will eventually cross paths with Fassbender's droid.
The actor will also be portraying another robot in the sequel. Fassbender will play a more advanced droid called Walter. When the robots meet with the crew of the Covenant, David will help the voyagers navigate the planet.
Last July, in an interview with Collider, Fassbender teased "Alien: Covenant." He said, "It's much scarier than 'Prometheus' but it's got the same sort of scope of 'Prometheus.' It's kind of got more of the sort of thriller, imminent disaster feel that Alien had, so it's kind of a beautiful meeting of both of those films."
Aside from Fassbender, fans of the franchise can expect to see Katherine Waterston who will star as Daniels, a new crew member of the ship. Danny McBride will portray the role of the captain, while Noomi Rapace is expected to reprise her role as the archeologist Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. She was the sole human survivor of the wrecked Prometheus ship. To add, the film will feature actors Billy Crudup, Guy Pearce and Jussie Smollett.
"Alien: Covenant" is expected to hit the big screen on May 19, 2017.
