The fourth season of ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will feature links between the TV series and the forthcoming Marvel movie "Doctor Strange" starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

In an interview, co-creator Jed Whedon explained that the mystery box in the show is the connection to the "Doctor Strange" film.

To recap, the premiere episode of the fourth season showed that May (Ming-Na Wen) and some Chinese smugglers went crazy after they came into contact with a mysterious box. Although the executive producer hinted at the box, he didn't reveal what was inside it or what was it about the box that made everyone insane.

After the pilot episode, Whedon answered a few questions about the ongoing season of the show. The executive producer revealed that it will be introducing supernatural elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to connect the TV show with "Doctor Strange."

"Our ties are at times very direct and at times are more thematic," Whedon told Entertainment Weekly. "The tie this year will feel more of a reflection of the movie, less an interweaving plot. As that movie hits the world, it comes at the right time in our show, and you will see some of those same ideas being explored," he added.

In the current season, fans will see more of Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna). The character will eventually team up with Daisy (Chloe Bennet).

Although she initially begged Ghost Rider to end her life, the pair will eventually see that they both share common interest. In particular, both of the characters seek answers.

Fans of the show can catch the fourth season of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." when it airs every Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC. On the other hand, Marvel's "Doctor Strange" will premiere in theaters Friday, Nov. 4.
