ABC television series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." concluded its fifth season last Wednesday with an action-packed two-part special finale, and viewers were shocked as two agents paid the ultimate price in the end.

One of the major highlights in the finale was the death of Daisy's two love interests: Brett Dalton and Lincoln Mitchell. The rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. will surely struggle particularly with Lincoln's loss, since he sacrificed his life to launch Hive. "It's safe to say they were emotionally affected by it. When we come back, we'll get a sense of how it's affected their plan moving forward and the way they operate," executive producer Jed Whedon told Comic Book Resources.

Whedon also caught up with Variety where he discussed the chance of Fitz and Simmons engaging in an actual relationship. Despite the possibility, the executive producer does not want fans to get their hopes up this early. "Obviously, relationships are complicated, especially when you work within a spy organization," he said. "We hoped at the end of this year to put them in that position... one of the best things about FitzSimmons was hoping they would get together, and so when you put them together, you lose the hope that they will get together. We have to move on to a new thing and I think we're trying to give them a relationship that's based on a friendship, which is what we loved about them initially, but as they move forward, I think things will find themselves to be much more complicated than that."

The third season largely featured the Inhuman mythology and the launch of the Secret Warriors initiative. For the next season's main theme, Whedon shared their plans without giving too much away, saying, "...I think our show started as not all heroes are super because we were about the little guy who doesn't have powers. Now, some of our people do have powers and some of them don't. Next year, with the advances in technology, we might be asking the question of, 'If you can have this, do you want it?' And a little bit of being careful what you wish for. That's about as specific as we can get."

As of now, the network has not yet announced an official release date for "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 4, but the series will likely return around late September of this year.
