'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 4 air date, plot spoilers: First official photo featuring Gabriel Luna's Ghost Rider revealed; EP shares details on new character

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is just a few weeks away from its much-hyped season 4 premiere, and a new photo featuring Marvel's Ghost Rider has been recently unveiled.
Portrayed by Gabriel Luna, Ghost Rider is also known as Marvel's flamed spirit of vengeance. Once portrayed by Nicolas Cage in two feature-length films, Ghost Rider will be making his Marvel Universe debut in the hit ABC series. As seen in the image, Luna stares directly into the camera while sitting next to a pile of metal junk. He is wearing Ghost Rider's signature black motorcycle jacket and gloves, paired with simple denim pants and black sneakers.
Executive producer Jed Whedon recently caught up with Entertainment Weekly where he shared details on the new character for the upcoming installment. "As always, we are going to put our own spin on the character," he said. "We are staying true to the comics in the places where we feel like it's really important—we love the character's family dynamic and the East L.A. kid in him."
The EP added that the storyline will delve deeper into unknown worlds as the show progresses. "We're opening it up even further to the world of things we don't totally understand, or as Thor says, 'Magic is science that we don't understand.' Well, we're getting into some very, very fancy science," he continued.
Co-executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen also shared an interesting teaser, saying: "Our team will definitely be trying to science this guy with the flaming skull."
Meanwhile, fans were outraged after the show tapped actor Jason O'Mara for a series regular role as the new Director. Many viewers expected familiar faces including Melinda May, Maria Hill, or Sharon Carter to take over the reins after Coulson's departure back in season 3. It remains to be seen how the team's dynamic will change after their new leader enters the picture.
Tune in to the season 4 premiere of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
