Six men from Minnesota were charged Monday with conspiracy and attempt to provide material support to the Islamic State extremist group in the Middle East.

"The six defendants charged in the complaint allegedly planned to travel to Syria as part of their conspiracy to provide material support to ISIL," said U.S. Assistant Attorney General John Carlin.

According to Department of Justice, the men worked over a course of 10 months to join ISIS. The department identified the men as Zacharia Yusuf Abdurahman, 19; Adnan Farah, 19; Hanad Mustafe Musse, 19; and Guled Ali Omar, 20, who were arrested in Minneapolis on April 19. Two other men, Abdirahman Yasin Daud, 21, and Mohamed Abdihamid Farah, 21, were arrested in California.

They were arrested after the F.B.I. conducted an investigation on the activities of the suspects. The department said some of the suspects succeeded in joining the ISIS.

The men were connected to Abdullah Yusuf and Abdi Nur, who were charged last year with conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS.

A. Farah, for instance, applied for a passport on April 25, 2014 and listed his planned departure to be on May 30, 2014 and China as destination.

When questioned, he "maintained he was planning to travel to China but acknowledged that he had no money to travel to China, did not have a job, nor did he know how much it would cost to travel to China."

Omar, according to the charge sheet, planned to leave the U.S. and join ISIS in May 2014. A confidential human source said Omar planned to travel to California where he would depart for Syria.

Last November, M. Farah, Musse, Abdurahman and Omar attempted to leave the U.S. for Syria to join ISIS.

They tried to fly from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to San Diego then go to Syria but they failed.

The men tried several times to leave the U.S.
