Lauren Hill Brain Cancer: Brave Dying Basketball Player Scores 4 Points In Final Game For Her Team
With just months to live after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, Lauren Hill stepped up to play for Mount St. Joseph University's basketball team on Monday, Nov. 2, where she scored four points.
Her team won the game that was originally scheduled to happen two weeks later but was moved up by the NCAA to give Hill an opportunity to play.
The game also had to be shifted to a bigger venue at nearby Xavier University to accommodate more people. Even so, the 10,250 tickets were snapped up within minutes following the announcement of the ticket sale.
Today notes that all the proceeds from the game will go to "The Cure Starts Now" foundation which is working towards a cure for pediatric brain cancer.
Before the game began, the head coach of the Mount St. Joseph's team said Hill might only be able to play for a few minutes. But during the game, Hill came on to the court twice and spent the rest of the time on the bench wearing sunglasses and headphones.
When she first came on court she got the ball in the very first play and pushed it off the glass and into the bucket. She also scored when she stepped on to the court with 26.5 seconds left on the clock.
Since her diagnosis with pediatric cancer, Hill has sought to raise awareness about it and has started a layup challenge, which has since caught the attention of many athletes such as Andy Dalton. In addition, Hill, who is from Lawrenceburg, Indiana, has received a large amount of support from basketball teams and players all over the U.S.
Hill, who doctors expect to live only until December this year, earlier expressed her desire to play in one college basketball game before her death. Speaking to ESPN before the game, Hill stated that "I've always wanted to step out on a college court, look down at my shoes and feel the vibration of the crowd."
