'Wonder Woman' news, spoilers: Gal Gadot says only a female director could have helmed the film
"Batman v Superman" star Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in the superheroine's first ever solo movie, "Wonder Woman," which is due out next year.
The upcoming film is the iconic character's first cinematic stand-alone in her 75-year history. Fittingly enough, two strong women — Gadot, who was in the Israeli Army, and director Patty Jenkins — are taking the reins on the project.
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gadot spoke about working with Jenkins, saying that it was important for her that a woman would direct the film. According to the "Wonder Woman" star, because the film is about Diana Prince's growth from a girl to a superheroine, "I think only a woman, who has been a girl, can be able to tell the story in the right way."
Gadot also talked about the differences between working with male directors and working with Jenkins, saying that filming "Wonder Woman" was a different experience.
"It feels like the communication is different," the actress said. "We talk about emotions. With Patty, it's a thing now, we communicate with our eyes."
The actress also praised Jenkins' brilliance and vision for the film, saying that the director knew exactly what she wanted "Wonder Woman" to be. Gadot recounted how, for a long time, producers didn't know how to tell the superheroine's story. But once she and Jenkins talked about Wonder Woman, they were able to figure out that they could portray the character as a normal woman who is smart and independent but can also be confused and lose her confidence.
"There was a period of time when we had two very different visions and I wanted them to find the right director for the job," Jenkins said in a separate interview with EW. "It turned out we had a shared vision after all."
According to the director, who was reportedly approached about the project as early as 2005, her vision was to tell Wonder Woman's origin story along with her romance with Steven Trevor (Chris Pine).
"From my point of view, this was the movie I was talking to them about for about eight or nine years," she added.
"Wonder Woman" is scheduled to hit theaters June 2, 2017.
