'True Detective' season 3 news 2016: Notable Hollywood stars to be faces of series' third installment?

Is there light at the end of the tunnel for "True Detective" season 3? | HBO

In light of the drama that hounded "True Detective," it seems as if things are looking up for the series, and if all else falls into place, then there could be a third season after all.

The second season of HBO's original crime anthology was met with mixed reviews especially after it failed to deliver as successfully as its predecessor did. HBO has since taken blame for the lackluster second season, even going as far as saying they rushed writer-creator Nic Pizzolatto into finishing season 2's arc quickly to bank on the success of season 1.

Michael Lombardo, then HBO's president of programming told The Independent why the second season fell flat even though it Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, and Colin Farrell tried to work their magic on the show.

"Our biggest failures — and I don't know if I would consider True Detective 2 — but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked — we've failed," he said.

Now, Lombardo is out as head of programming, and his successor, Casey Bloys, has apparently given Pizzolatto the option to work on a show first to give him time to gather his wits about before breathing new life into "True Detective" season 3.

Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey, who starred as Rustin Cohle in "True Detective" season 1, has expressed his desire in reprising the role that earned him an Emmy nomination.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights," the actor told Vanity Fair. "I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island."

Aside from McConaughey, another Hollywood star seemed to hint of a role in "True Detective" season 3. Back in April, actress Olivia Munn, who recently appeared as Psylocke in "X-Men: Apocalypse" posted a snapshot on her Instagram account with an intriguing caption.

The 35-year-old captioned the photo, which is shown below, "True Detective Season 3 #officexmasparty."

Within seconds after posting it, the post earned 18,000 likes and more than 200 comments from fans of "True Detective." Fans are hoping the post meant that production has begun for the series as early as April and that it merely stumbled on a roadblock before filming starts again.

With both McConaughey and Munn seemingly hinting on the same thing, would it be safe to assume that HBO would soon announce "True Detective" season 3? Keep coming back for updates.
