'The Mindy Project' season 5 spoilers: Season 5B will find Mindy getting a second chance
Nurse Ben (Bryan Greenberg) broke up with Mindy (Mindy Kaling) in the midseason finale of "The Mindy Project" season 5. But have viewers seen the last of the charismatic pediatric nurse?
In the episode, the sitcom's milestone 100th, Ben caught Mindy kissing her ex, Jamie (B.J. Novak). This led to a shouting match between Ben and Mindy, with the former accusing the latter of being ashamed of him, and the latter accusing the former of not living up to his full potential. In the end, Ben dumped Mindy, telling her that he's perfectly fine with who he is and that she is the one who is inadequate.
While this may indeed be the end of the Mindy-Ben romance, the synopsis for the midseason premiere of "The Mindy Project" season 5 hinted at a possible reconciliation.
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Hulu released the midseason premiere air date and the midseason premiere synopsis for the current season. According to the synopsis, the midseason premiere will pick up right where the 100th episode left off and will find Mindy reeling from her breakup with Ben. Fortunately, she will "find herself with a magical chance to make things right."
The synopsis also revealed that there's more drama to come for Jeremy (Ed Weeks), Morgan (Ike Barinholtz), and the rest of the Shulman & Associates staff. Morgan will struggle with Colette's (Fortune Feimster) dating life, Jeremy will try to prevent another heart attack, and Jody (Garret Dillahunt) will struggle with his feelings for Mindy.
Interestingly, the synopsis also teased that Mindy will discover that her "happily ever after" might be different from what she expected. Does this mean that Mindy will finally be able to set aside her expectations and appreciate Ben for who he is? Or will her "happily ever after" involve a different man?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "The Mindy Project" executive producer Matt Warburton spoke about the upcoming season 5B, saying, "We have a couple of high-concept fantasy episodes in the second half of the season."
"One is the white man episode," he said. "The other one is our midseason premiere, but I will leave you in suspense about that one," he added.
According to Warburton, the events in the 100th episode have a "pretty big effect on the season." "Some pretty big stuff happens that we're going to follow through to the end," he said.
The back half of "The Mindy Project" season 5, which will consist of seven episodes, drops on Feb. 14, 2017, on Hulu.
