"The Blacklist" season 4 is set to premiere in September, and apparently, Liz's strained relationship with former partner Red will be the upcoming season's focal point.

In "The Blacklist" season 3, Liz (Megan Boone) was seen faking her own death just so she and her husband Tom (Ryan Eggold) could get away from Red Reddington (James Spader). She, her husband, and their infant daughter Agnes escaped to Cuba. However, a bigger question looms: Who among Red, Kirk, and Liz is telling the truth?

According to Asia Stars News, season 4 would reveal Liz's identity, even as the same could allay or worsen her doubts. Red's motives could also come to light once Liz agrees to meet her alleged biological father, Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen). It seems that Liz's suspicions of Red would only increase because of his continued reluctance to answer her questions.

Executive producer John Eisendrath said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that, since Liz seemed to be very convinced of Kirk's honesty, he might not be the big bad of the upcoming season. That leaves Red, who has earned the brunt of Liz's distrust, as the possible season 4 villain.

Co-executive producer Jon Bokenkamp even dished on how season 3's events will affect Liz and Red's relationship in "The Blacklist" season 4 when he talked to Deadline.

"Here's what I love about this arc and her death — our fans, the really diehard fans, they were pissed when Liz died! They're smart enough to know that Red and Liz are the show. ... Hopefully, they see we're not going to abandon that relationship, no matter how strained it becomes. And believe me — it will be strained. But that relationship is everything," he said.

Bokenkamp also said that the upcoming season would explore the team's, including Red's, reactions to Liz's faked death and said "The Blacklist" season 4 will be a "roller coaster ride." Fans shouldn't worry, though, because he likewise confirmed that season 4 would pick up right where season 3 left off.

"The Blacklist" season 4 will premiere on Sept. 22 on NBC.
