'Suits' season 6 news, updates, spoilers: Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams tease upcoming season would be a 'whole new show'
The fifth season ender of "Suits" saw Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) calling off his marriage to Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle) and surrendering himself to the authorities for fraud. It would be recalled that Mike accepted a two-year plea deal to spare his colleagues at the law firm. Now, with the impending return of the show for its sixth run, fans would see Mike getting a rude awakening while in prison.
According to TV Guide, season 6 would pick up immediately where the last season left off, so fans would see Mike spending his first night in jail. While he would bond with a cellmate and would think everything is okay in prison terms, he would soon find out that there's "a huge target" not just on his back but on someone else, too.
In an interview with TV Line, Adams said his character doing time in prison "was a bold, scary step for the writers to take," something that has "taken the show in a brand new direction." The actor said season 6, which he refers to as "a whole new" series, will push Mike to his breaking point.
"I think he's going to be tested more than ever in this season," Adams previews. "That means new characters and... new interactions and new relationships and new threats."
Among the new characters that would grace the show are Malcolm-Jamal Warner as a prison counselor and Erik Palladino as an inmate.
Meanwhile, Gabriel Macht, who plays Harvey Specter, will seize every imaginable opportunity to free Mike. He would also do everything he can to clean up the mess he apparently made to Pearson Specter Litt – a lawsuit – that drove all employees away. The partners have defected, so now it's up to Harvey, Jessica (Gina Torres), Donna (Sarah Rafferty), Louis (Rick Hoffman), and Rachel to make the firm rise up from the ashes.
In other "Suits" news, Rafferty said Harvey and Donna's love story, which met an unfortunate end when she decided to work for Louis, might not be the focal point of season 6. She might have helped Harvey deal with Mike's problem towards the end of season 5, but that was it.
"We're not going to dig too much into emotions between [Donna and Harvey]," she teased about the two's "confusing relationship." "They're really busy working s—t out, and they're not going to have their confusing relationship status get in the way of their goals."
"Suits" season 6 is premiering on July 13, at 9 p.m. on USA Network.
