'Once Upon a Time' season 6 spoilers, release date: Premiere date confirmed as showrunners reveal plans of reverting to show's old format
Now that ABC has confirmed "Once Upon a Time" season 6's premiere date, fans would be happy to know that several new characters will be added to the show to make the smaller arcs and small-town storylines even more interesting.
Showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adan Horowitz have recently confirmed that Hyde (Sam Witwer), who was injected into the series in the fifth season, will be returning for the sixth run, and apparently, his arrival in Storybrooke would wreak complications and have an immense impact on the characters that fans have grown to love.
"The condition of life in Storybrooke is very important. Hyde's arrival impacts that. We're planning to explore a lot of what that's going to mean for the day-to-day life in Storybrooke," Horowitz said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
The co-creators also said that for season 6, they would be reverting to the format that the show followed in seasons 1 and 2. That means the upcoming season's stories would revolve around Storybrooke, particularly back to Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) as the teacher, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) as the sheriff, and Grumpy (Lee Arenberg) as the janitor.
Aside from the small town stories, the showrunners also said they are changing things around, ditching the storytelling method the show has adopted from seasons 3 through 5.
"We are changing around what we're doing this year and going back to that season 1 mentality of small-town stories and smaller arcs," Kitsis said.
Meanwhile, TV Line has confirmed that aside from Hyde, three more characters will be joining "Once Upon a Time" season 6. There's Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams; Sinbad, a 30-something, roguishly charming and quick-witted here; and Scheherazade, a regal Middle Eastern woman from "One Thousand and One Nights."
Apparently, the upcoming season would also deal with what happened in the season 5 finale when the Evil Queen seemingly separated from Regina Mills (both played by Lana Parilla) in much the same way that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are now separated. Carter Matt noted that this change could lead to interesting developments in Parilla's characters.
"Once Upon a Time" season 6 returns to the small screen on Sept. 25, 8 p.m., on ABC.
