'Ocean's Eight' cast news, release date: Matt Damon cameo is on
A member of Danny Ocean's (George Clooney) original heist team will appear alongside the all-female crew of the upcoming "Ocean's Eight."
This week, Matt Damon, who starred as Linus Caldwell in the "Ocean's" trilogy, confirmed that he is set to reprise his role as the naive pickpocket in the Sandra Bullock-led spinoff.
The actor shared the info with Entertainment Tonight during the premiere of "Manchester By The Sea" at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Monday, Nov. 14. Damon produced the film, which features his "Ocean's" co-star Casey Affleck. Both Damon and Affleck appeared in "Ocean's Eleven" (2001), "Ocean's Twelve" (2004), and "Ocean's Thirteen" (2007).
"I think I'm doing a little bit in the movie," Damon teased. "I haven't read it yet, but the cast is phenomenal and I'm excited to see what those women do with it. It's going to be fun," he added.
"Ocean's Eight," which is set in the same universe as the Steven Soderbergh-helmed trilogy, stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Dakota Fanning, and Awkwafina. The film's cast also reportedly includes "Homeland" alum Damian Lewis and "Boyhood" actor Richard Robichaux. The film is directed by Gary Ross. Principal photography began in October in New York City.
This week, the Daily Mail published paparazzi shots of the "Ocean's Eight" cast on the New York set of the upcoming spinoff. Bullock and Blanchett were snapped filming a scene near a New York waterway. The two were also reportedly spotted filming in Brooklyn's Red Hook area.
Rumors of an "Ocean's" spinoff had been swirling for years before news that "Ocean's Eight" was in development broke in 2015. According to The Independent, the film centers on a group of women who team up to steal a necklace from the Met Ball in an attempt to frame a gallery owner who is presumably the film's villain.
"Ocean's Eight" hits theaters June 8, 2018.
