'NCIS' season 14 cast news, updates: Could Wilmer Valderrama's entry fill the void left by Michael Weatherly's exit? Scottie Thompson weighs in on it
"NCIS" season 14 had to undergo a major overhaul after Michael Weatherly, who plays Agent Tony DiNozzo, bid the series goodbye after 13 seasons. Fans thought other characters would finally be given their own arcs, but it looks like the producers' antidote is to add more actors to the show in place of Weatherly.
Aside from Sarah Clarke and British actor Duane Henry who were inserted into the series last spring in recurring roles (they have since graduated to being series regulars), "That '70s Show" star Wilmer Valderrama is the latest to be added to CBS' crime-drama.
According to TV Line, Valderrama is set to join "NCIS" season 14 as a full-fledged series regular. He will be playing a yet-unnamed NCIS field agent who has been deemed "missing" after taking on a deep cover assignment years back.
He never resurfaced, so other agents thought he was either dead or no longer on the job. Now, though, he has come back, but his "dedication to job and country has left him an unpredictable, charismatic loose cannon."
After his stint with "That '70s Show," Valderrama has appeared on various series including Fox's "Minority Report" and "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series." He also recently wrapped up a 5-episode recurring role on "Grey's Anatomy." Demi Lovato's ex-boyfriend has also appeared in some indie movies, including "To Whom it May Concern" and "The Adderall Diaries," where he starred with James Franco and Amber Heard.
Meanwhile, Scottie Thompson, who plays DiNozzo's ex-girlfriend Dr. Jeanne Benoit on the series, said she would be "curious to see how it [the series] goes forward." She added that she hopes "NCIS" would continue enjoying the success it has taken pleasure from the past 13 seasons.
With Weatherly being a huge character in the show, Thompson said "NCIS" needed to bring in someone with the same charisma that he had.
"... It'll be interesting to see what happens with this - I'll be sitting on the sidelines waiting and watching eagerly to see how it goes down.," she told Mirror. "But the rest of the cast is all so amazing, and they're all going to continue rocking it."
Gary Glasberg, "NCIS'" executive producer said fans would see new cast member Valderrama "like they've never seen him before," adding that the role would allow him to "flex his dramatic, physical and comedic talents."
There is no word yet when "NCIS" season 14 would premiere on CBS.
